How To Measure For A Stair Runner

How to Measure Straight Stairs for Stair Runners

Measuring the length so you can work out the length of runner required. You just need to measure the tread and riser of one step. The tread is the horizontal surface of the step and the riser is the vertical surface of the next step above. Add them together and multiply by the total number of steps.
Measuring the width, start by measuring the full width of the step then deduct by a minimum of 5cm from each end. As long as there is a minimum of 5cm the actually width of the runner can be personal preference.

Points to note

The runner will end at the top riser, leaving out the top step (landing).

Alternatively you can continue the runner onto the landing, if this is the case measure the length of the landing.

It is a good idea to allow extra material for cutting and fitting onto the length required.

Quarter Landings

Measure the width, this should be the same as the runner on the straight stairs.
Measure the length of the quarter landing and extend the measurement over the edge to include the riser directly below it.

L Shaped Pieces for quarter landings

Measure the width, this should be the same as the runner on the straight stairs.
Measure the length of the quarter landing and extend the measurement over the edge to include the riser directly below it and above it. Pictures are useful also to show the shape.
